VPN Guide - When You Need It, When You Don't

Virtual Private Networks, or VPNs, are a common tool in corporate environments.
They provide a secure method for accessing company resources when abroad and not connected to corporate networks.

A VPN allows traffic from one network to travel over the internet through a "private tunnel" to another network, which grants hosts access to internal resources and programs from anywhere in the world.
It provides little, to no protection against malware or bad actors.

If travelling to a country with restricted internet access (ie. China) please reach out to the IT department.

A VPN is never necessary, or at all helpful, when connected to any LDFC location's network via WiFi or ethernet.

Below is a list of situations where a VPN is required, when out of office:

1. Accessing ERP systems via S2K or Green Screen

2. Utilizing the company file shares (P:\ drives)

3. Making or receiving calls through Mitel Connect

4. Printing to branch printers from home or abroad

5. Connecting remotely to internal servers (Knowledge Sync, Truck Mate, PDM Vault, Vanguard)

Below is a list of situations where a VPN is NOT required:

1. If you are connected to any LDFC location's network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet

2. Accessing your email or Teams

3. General web browsing

4. Using Pro Link

5. Accessing files through SharePoint, Microsoft 365, or OneDrive.
